Sesame Central is the National Sesame Program of Research, led by CQUniversity Australia (CQU) and supported by AgriFutures Australia. It is the primary national research initiative driving the development of a sustainable and profitable sesame industry for Australian producers.

Program Focus Areas

  • Varietal Development: Breeding and evaluating new sesame varieties suited to Australian growing conditions, with emphasis on non-shattering traits and early maturity
  • Agronomy: Developing best-practice agronomic guidelines for sesame production across northern Australia's diverse growing regions
  • Market Development: Identifying and developing domestic and international market opportunities for Australian sesame grain and products
  • Grower Support: Providing technical resources, training and extension services to support sesame producers

Key Outputs

The program has delivered significant outputs including field trial data from multiple growing regions, agronomic guidelines, variety assessments, and market analysis reports. ASIDA collaborates closely with Sesame Central to ensure research outcomes are translated into practical benefit for the industry.
