Great North Spice (GNS) is a research project funded by the Cooperative Research Centre for Northern Australia (CRCNA) and based at CQUniversity Australia. The project supports the development of sesame and other spice crops as viable commercial enterprises in northern Australia.
Project Objectives
- Evaluate the commercial potential of spice crops — including sesame — for northern Australian farming systems
- Conduct variety trials and agronomy research under tropical and subtropical conditions
- Develop industry supply chains and market linkages for spice crop producers
- Build grower capacity and knowledge in spice crop production
Relevance to ASIDA
The Great North Spice project is a key partner program for ASIDA, providing complementary research and resources that support the Australian sesame industry's development goals. Outputs from GNS directly inform ASIDA's agronomy and market development activities.
